Upper Lewis River — 2 Day – Washington Llamas

Upper Lewis River — 2 Day

Overview

This is an easy and delightful trip, great for introducing children or adults to backpacking, without having to have your own gear and carry it in. Our trips have included people aged 5 to 75!  Enjoy giant Douglas-fir and cedar trees, hiking along the Lewis River, always clear with beautiful pools and rapids, and getting to know the llamas. The trip provides a perfect opportunity for springtime and early summer solitude in a very peaceful setting.

Itinerary

Day 1 :

We start at the 9039 road trailhead for the upper Lewis River trail and follows the trail 3.1 miles upstream. We camp at a site with a nice view of the beautiful Lewis River, and a large sand/rock bar, perfect for hours of exploring the variety of rocks, or watching butterflies.

Day 2 :

Day 2 we enjoy a camp breakfast with some time to explore the area a bit more, then we depart for home after lunch.

What can I expect for meals?

We strive to provide exceptional meals in the backcountry. We can customize the menu for your group.  All dietary requests must be made at least 2 weeks before the trip. Pescatarian, and dairy-free are easily accommodated. Vegan and gluten-free are available individually through commercial dried dinners with fresh additives that we will bring.

  • For dinners, expect fresh meats and fish, steamed vegetables, salad, fresh bread and dessert baked in Dutch ovens when fire danger is low.
  • Lunches include wraps with fresh meats and cheese, as well as fresh fruit.  Snacks include a selection of energy bars or similar items.
  • A fancy breakfast is standard fare on the layover day on the 3-day trip, sometimes with fresh coffee cake if fire danger allows.

What should I bring?

The llamas carry 30 lbs of personal gear per person, including the provided tent and sleeping pad (4 to 6 lbs). If your gear exceeds 30 lbs, you’ll need to carry the excess. We recommend avoiding this so you can enjoy the treat of backcountry travel with just a light day pack containing snacks, raingear, and anything else you may need while hiking. Feel free to call us before the trip to help you pare down.

  • Day pack

Where do we meet?

Typically we meet up at the trailhead at 9 a.m. for the hike.  There is limited parking at the trailhead, no restrooms, and no Forest Pass is required.
